I have an obsession with the Sons of Feanor, even though I despise Celegorm and Caranthir. I love Maglor and I like Maedhros a lot because they are such complex characters-- causing devastation and yet being the least twisted of all the sons. Although, I know fanfiction plays a big part in what I like about certain characters.
Don't get me wrong, Elrond is one of my most favorite characters ever. I love his family-- Elladan, Elrohir, Aragorn, Elrond. Arwen I'm kind of neutral on, which is weird.
I usually only read the fanfiction that suits my image of the character. I like to wonder why Maglor let Elrond and Elros go, why Maedhros would go search for Elured and Elurin... they're just fascinating characters and I find it hard to believe that they are wholly evil.
I don't know what side I'd be on if I had to choose. Elrond and his family have to win above all others, though.
Actually, I don't like Arwen at all, but don't tell anyone
I do know that Maedhros and Maglor are very complex and not entirely evil characters - I can even pity them to some extent, especially Maglor. But their few good deeds do not have the power to undo or atone for the bad ones. Even if their oath and all that came from it was just a tragic mistake.
Perfectly understandable. Nothing they do can erase the three Kin Slayings that they participated in. That's a good opinion and I respect it. I don't think anything really erases the hundreds of lives they've taken, but there's just something about them.
To be honest, I was a bit nervous about your possible reaction - since you are, after all, a true Maedhros fan.
And, you see, I am not. I've always found him a tough nut to crack. Very, very hard to understand, and even harder to feel for. Don't get me wrong, I think he's an amazing character, with so many possibilities of interpretation. But I cannot like him, let alone love him. My heart is with the other side. Dior. Elwing.
He is fantastic - lovely original face. I agree he is in style of the ancient masters - as Ivanneth's drawings. I just bought a book and movie about Da Vinci and Michelangelo, can't stop looking at these. It's all Ivanneth's fault! Now I know where her Ignudi are coming from Great idea.
But I don't think your art you could offend my Maedhros in any way But I admit once I have seen a photomanip which has awoken a kinslayer in me Still I can't believe someone did it to Maedhros *sigh* But for this person my art might be awful, too. You might try to portray his evil side, that would be interesting, too. I plan to, one day.
Dior - I tried to paint him once, too. But as you see the result is not that fantastic. I was trying to repaint him in the real Dior, but failed with it.
Ancient masters? Dear me, my hands start shaking when you mention Ivanneth (bloody classically trained artists those hours of life drawing do pay off in the end, and when I remember how the crowd from the Academy complained to us art historians about how much they have to draw ...lazy bums), she's already way better than I'll ever be... Ignudi are wonderful, really well drawn, really close to the real thing...
But... mention not the name of Michelangelo around here. His art is... well... something else. When you say his name, God listens, I'm sure...
Anyway, I would never try to make offensive art, not even about the characters I don't like. But I usually want to understand the characters I'm drawing, to like them, or feel compassion, or some kind of emotional bond. Maedhros remains an enigma for me. I tried to draw him in order to understand him better... As for the evil side, I'm in love with Kasiopea's "Maglor took pity". Now, that's a bloody scene.
Oh, I know your Dior. He is beautiful, but not the way I imagine him. But then, as usual, Tolkien was not precise in his descriptions...

Symmetry has always been difficult for me as well. Sometimes I hold a mirror perpendicular to my drawing and then take it away to see if it is symmetrical or not. Too bad it only works for face-foward portraits. My art teacher used to tell me to draw lines from the eye pupil and then see if the lines were parallel, but it always ended up looking like the person was shooting crossing laser beams from their eyes.
Well, human faces are asymmetrical anyway, so it's no big fuss.
But the eyes, yeah they should be symmetrical, or they look weird.
But Maedhros's eyes, considering the fact that his head is tilted and his eyebrow slightly raised, look ok to me.
